The other day, I came across the “No Love” music video by Eminem and noticed an effect in the video showing this choppy low frame rate effect. I became intrigued and wanted to try this in Sony Vegas. In this series of tutorials, I will take a look at various effects in commercials, music videos, movies, etc. and show you how you can produce some of the same effects in Sony Vegas Pro 12.

Let’s take a look at Color Matching in Sony Vegas Pro 12. This new plugin added through Event-FX, allows for you to match the color between clips. It can be used to match two or more cameras shooting the same scene, or for adding a single color effect to multiple clips.

How to Use Color Match

Apply the “Sony Color Match” effect to the clip you’d like to process. This can be applied to a media, event, track, or video output effect.

They’ve added a few presets to use but since we’re trying to match the color between clips, these won’t be necessary.

First, select an image source with one of the following methods;

Use Trimmer Image (Uses the current snapshop in the Trimmer window.)

Paste from Clipboard (Pastes a Copied Snapshot in from the clipboard.)

Browse for Image (Browse for an image file.)

Clip from Screen (Capture a source image from anywhere on your screen.)

Next, adjust the strength of the effect. This will adjust the amount of color or lightness applied to your video.

Selecting the Process Lightness check box will attempt to match the brightness and contrast of the source image. In the case the effect comes out too strong, you can manually adjust that with the other Vegas plug-ins as needed.

Halloween is here! To celebrate, let’s give some attention to our see through friends. I’ll take you through the steps it takes for making it appear as if a ghost is in your video. Who knows? You may even catch a real ghost in the process!

SETUP

You may want to to begin by planning everything out. You can use the free storyboard template found on RodyPolis.com to draw out what you want to happen. It’s helpful to plan everything ahead so you don’t forget anything.

Set your camera on a tripod and leave it there! Be sure everything’s set to manual as you don’t want any settings to change and mess up the shot. I recommend using a remote to trigger recording on the camera.

You also want to be sure the background is locked down. Everything should stay still for the best results. If outdoors, look out for any moving object in the background (ie. leaves, branches).

Be sure lighting stays the same throughout. I found it best to shoot at night and create my own light. That way I’m in control of how everything’s lit and it’ll stay that way until we’re done or dawn arrives.

PROCESS

Once everything’s locked in place, you’re ready to begin. I like to start off by recording the background. I knew the effect was going to be fairly short so I only shot about 15 seconds worth of footage. I then went ahead and told the ghostly actor what he had to do to do. You can have them walk through the scene, sit on a bench, or even just appear. It’s only limited to your imagination! All he had to do in this case was walk to a bench and sit. You can record some more background footage just to be sure.

VEGAS PRO

Import your footage into Sony Vegas. Add the clips to the timeline on separate tracks. Be sure the background footage is below the main footage on the timeline.

Trim your clips up and adjust the opacity of the main track on top. Set the opacity to what you think looks best. You can really dim it to make your friends look very closely then SMACK! The exorcist appears. Just an idea!

That’s it! Preview the video and a ghost should appear! Extra steps may be necessary depending on what you planned.

Today, we’re going to take a look at turning HD footage into Surveillance Footage using Sony Vegas Pro. With the help of a few FX, we should be able to pull it off quite easily.

Record your footage with the camera on a tripod. Typically, in a high corner somewhere you’d expect a surveillance camera to be. If your camera supports shooting in 4:3 that would look best. If not, you can convert it to 4:3 in Vegas or leave it at 16:9. Your preference.

Import your footage into Sony Vegas and place it in the timeline. It is important to import this footage in a whole new Vegas project as we’ll need to adjust the project properties for this effect to work.

In the Project Properties, set everything as necessary. My footage was shot in 720p at 30FPS. Change the Frame Rate to 5 Frames Per Second. Usually, surveillance systems record in low frame rates such as 7fps all the way to 1fps. I think 5fps looks best for this but you can always adjust as needed. Also, be sure to set the correct Motion blur type and Deinterlace method. Click OK.

If you play your video clip now, you’ll notice the choppiness. This is exactly what we want.

Now, lets add some event FX. Add Film Effects, TV Simiulator, and Quick Blur.

For Film Effects, choose Reset to None as the preset. Bring the Grain up to around 0.080 and check the box to turn on Convert to greyscale. Un-check Enable particles to disable them.

For TV Simulator, Reset to None as preset. Set Detail zoom: 4.0000 & Aperture grill: 0.0160.

For Quick Blur, set Blend amount: 1.000.

To enhance the effect you can add text overlay’s for the Camera Name/date/time.

I recommend rendering it out if you’ll be using it in an existing project. I typically go with .wmv. You may have to unckeck Match project settings to display all Output Formats. Here you can choose any preset depending on the quality you’re looking for. I chose 512 Kbps Video with the following settings;

Have you ever heard someone thinking to themselves in a movie or TV show? Their voice tends to have some kind of echo while they’re speaking. In today’s Sony Vegas tutorial, we’ll be taking a look at how to make audio echo as if the person or in this case, animal is thinking to themselves.

TUTORIAL:

Assuming you already have some footage in your timeline, let’s take a look at making it sound like the dog is thinking.

First, let’s record what she says. Start off by arming the audio track for record as we will be recording our own voice on an audio track straight in Vegas Pro. You may want to come up with a general idea of what you’re going to say or write a script as it’s easier. I just winged it here and luckily, it sounded pretty good.

Once you know what you’re going to say, you’re ready to record. Click Record down in the Transport bar.

You’ll get a Project Recorded Files Folder diologe window asking where you want to save your recorded files. Be sure everything’s set up where you want them to go and click OK.

You may now begin speaking into your mic and record what you want the person or animal to be thinking.

When finished, click the record or stop button to stop recording.

You’ll then get a Recorded Files diologue window showing your recorded files. You can either Delete or Rename files. If you’d prefer not to have this window pop-up in the future, simply tick the option to, “Show after every recording session” off. Click Done.

Now, we’re ready to add the FX. You can either add them to each audio clip under Event FX or to the entire Track which is what I’m going to do. Click Track FX found in the Timeline Header for the appropriate audio track. You’ll now see an Audio Track FX window. Be sure to see this handy Tip of the Day on how to Override Window Docking in Sony Vegas in case you want to move this window around without it docking.

In the Audio Track FX window, click the Plug-in Chain icon to reveal more effects you can add. With All selected in the folder area, choose Reverb. Either double-click it and click OK or click it once, then click Add and click OK, your choice.

I found that the Bright hall preset seems to work well in this case. Click the Preset down-arrow and choose [Sys] Bright hall.

However, I changed the Reverb out to -30.5 dB. You’re free to play around with these options to familiarize yourself with them and get the best output for your project.

That’s it! Close out of the Audio Track FX and see how it sounds. You should find it sounds pretty good for those times someone’s thinking to themselves in a video.

The other day, I was inspired by the movie, “Chronicle” to reproduce the titles shown at the end of the movie in Sony Vegas. It’s a very simple effect yet adds a nice little pop to titles and credits. In a nutshell, you’ll learn how to mask media events to make them transparent so that we can add any image or video behind them. Be sure to watch the video tutorial above to fully understand the power of masking.

In this written tutorial, we’ll mainly focus on how to mask text to reproduce the effect from the movie, “Chronicle“.

Step 1: Add Background Elements

Before we add any text, lets add what we want in the background.

You can use anything you want here like some digital glitch footage or even a still image. I provided a short clip of digital glitch from which you can download below.

[button url=”https://s3.amazonaws.com/robertsproductions/downloads/Glitch_Footage.zip” size=”medium” variation=”green”]Download Digital Glitch (42.9MB)[/button]

[highlight1 variation=”green”]Windows Media Audio/Video file (.wmv) 1280 x 720 42.9MB Length: 00:01:00[/highlight1]

If you added a still image, you can make it move by adding the TV Simulator and Film Grain effects using the following settings.

[tabs_framed]
[tab title=”TV Simulator Settings”]

[/tab]
[/tabs_framed]

Step 2: Add Text

Under Media Generators in Vegas, add your preferred text preset whether it’s the ProType Titler or the standard Titles & Text. I found the standard Titles & Text Default preset worked best since I didn’t need anything too fancy.

Be sure to keep your text “White”.

Step 3: Composite Mode

Change the Composite Mode for the track with the text media to, “Multiply (Mask)”. Your text should now be transparent and should show the background footage.

You’re free to animate the text however you’d like. I made it zoom in a bit for each title.

Note: Everything under the Masked track won’t be visible unless there’s footage to mask. Place any other media in a track above the Masked track.

Change Mask Background Color

To change the masks background color we need to add some media in an entirely new video track below everything else.

Once added you may not see the color or video clip appear right away. This is because we need to parent the glitch footage with the text. You can do this by clicking Make Compositing Child on the glitch video track.

Now you should be able to see the background color you added.

Alternate Way of Masking Text

If you want to make the area behind the text a different color, change the text color in the Generated Text Media to transparent and the background to any color of your choice. You don’t need to change the composite mode for this method. Just leave it at, “Source Alpha”.

That’s it! You’ve just learned a few masking techniques in Sony Vegas. You can do this to anything as long as the area to be masked is white.

This written tutorial was mainly focused on masking text. What are some things you’ve done to make text stand out more? Leave your response in the comments below!

[vimeo id=”32800195″ width=”600″ height=”350″]

Today, I’ll show you how to create this “Cool Blue” text effect I put together in Photoshop. You can download the PSD file below! If you like this, feel free to share it along!

How-to:

1. Start Photoshop and create a new document. I set the size to 1280px by 720px but you can make it bigger or smaller depending on the project your working on. Next I added some text with the following styles;

Font: Impact

Size: 274 pt

Color: #00a9e8

2. Then I’ve added the following layer styles to my text layer.

Drop Shadow

Inner Shadow

Inner Glow

Bevel and Emboss

Stroke

Click through the tabs below to see the settings I used for each layer style.

I’ve also added a nice little grey background for the text too. That’s it! You can download the PSD below and copy the layer styles from my text layer to your own!

Download

Click the button on the above to download the PSD File!
