Simply adjust the Amount and Size. Then, animate the Evolution over time until you achieve the desired effect.

Turbulent Displace

Let’s say I want to make some underwater text come to life and add a bit of motion to it. First go to the Effects panel and search for,”Turb“. From here, I find “Turbulent Displace“.

I’ll click on the effect and drag it to my text clip I want to have the effect.

Now, I’ll select the text clip and go to the Effects panel for it. From here, you’ll see the Turbulent Displace effect for the clip. I’ll start by animating the Evolution so I can see the effect in action. Place the marker at the beginning of the clip and click the stopwatch next to Evolution.

It should be at 0 for now. Next, move the marker toward the end of the clip and increase the Evolution. You’ll want this to make several revolutions so hold Shift to rapidly increase the amount. Preview the clip after adjusting and change the Evolution amount depending how fast you want the effect to happen.

Now that we have our Evolution animated, we can adjust the Amount and Size. Increase or decrease these values depending how strong you want the effect to be. The Amount adjusts the distortion amount, Size adjusts the area of distortion, and Evolution changes the turbulence over time.

I ended up choosing 15.0 for the Amount, 20.0 for the Size and 31×300.0° degrees for the Evolution. Now that’s the effect I’m looking for!

Use this effect to your imagination.

As requested, we’ll be taking a look at how to do just that in Vegas Pro 12. We’ll be using general features not bound to just Vegas Pro so feel free to apply these techniques to your favorite editing platform.

TUTORIAL:

Assuming you already have some footage in your timeline, let’s take a look at making it sound like the dog is thinking.

First, let’s record what she says. Start off by arming the audio track for record as we will be recording our own voice on an audio track straight in Vegas Pro. You may want to come up with a general idea of what you’re going to say or write a script as it’s easier. I just winged it here and luckily, it sounded pretty good.

Once you know what you’re going to say, you’re ready to record. Click Record down in the Transport bar.

You’ll get a Project Recorded Files Folder diologe window asking where you want to save your recorded files. Be sure everything’s set up where you want them to go and click OK.

You may now begin speaking into your mic and record what you want the person or animal to be thinking.

When finished, click the record or stop button to stop recording.

You’ll then get a Recorded Files diologue window showing your recorded files. You can either Delete or Rename files. If you’d prefer not to have this window pop-up in the future, simply tick the option to, “Show after every recording session” off. Click Done.

Now, we’re ready to add the FX. You can either add them to each audio clip under Event FX or to the entire Track which is what I’m going to do. Click Track FX found in the Timeline Header for the appropriate audio track. You’ll now see an Audio Track FX window. Be sure to see this handy Tip of the Day on how to Override Window Docking in Sony Vegas in case you want to move this window around without it docking.

In the Audio Track FX window, click the Plug-in Chain icon to reveal more effects you can add. With All selected in the folder area, choose Reverb. Either double-click it and click OK or click it once, then click Add and click OK, your choice.

I found that the Bright hall preset seems to work well in this case. Click the Preset down-arrow and choose [Sys] Bright hall.

However, I changed the Reverb out to -30.5 dB. You’re free to play around with these options to familiarize yourself with them and get the best output for your project.

That’s it! Close out of the Audio Track FX and see how it sounds. You should find it sounds pretty good for those times someone’s thinking to themselves in a video.

The other day, I was inspired by the movie, “Chronicle” to reproduce the titles shown at the end of the movie in Sony Vegas. It’s a very simple effect yet adds a nice little pop to titles and credits. In a nutshell, you’ll learn how to mask media events to make them transparent so that we can add any image or video behind them. Be sure to watch the video tutorial above to fully understand the power of masking.

In this written tutorial, we’ll mainly focus on how to mask text to reproduce the effect from the movie, “Chronicle“.

Step 1: Add Background Elements

Before we add any text, lets add what we want in the background.

You can use anything you want here like some digital glitch footage or even a still image. I provided a short clip of digital glitch from which you can download below.

If you added a still image, you can make it move by adding the TV Simulator and Film Grain effects using the following settings.

Step 2: Add Text

Under Media Generators in Vegas, add your preferred text preset whether it’s the ProType Titler or the standard Titles & Text. I found the standard Titles & Text Default preset worked best since I didn’t need anything too fancy.

Be sure to keep your text “White”.

Step 3: Composite Mode

Change the Composite Mode for the track with the text media to, “Multiply (Mask)”. Your text should now be transparent and should show the background footage.

You’re free to animate the text however you’d like. I made it zoom in a bit for each title.

Note: Everything under the Masked track won’t be visible unless there’s footage to mask. Place any other media in a track above the Masked track.

Change Mask Background Color

To change the masks background color we need to add some media in an entirely new video track below everything else.

Once added you may not see the color or video clip appear right away. This is because we need to parent the glitch footage with the text. You can do this by clicking Make Compositing Child on the glitch video track.

Now you should be able to see the background color you added.

Alternate Way of Masking Text

If you want to make the area behind the text a different color, change the text color in the Generated Text Media to transparent and the background to any color of your choice. You don’t need to change the composite mode for this method. Just leave it at, “Source Alpha”.

That’s it! You’ve just learned a few masking techniques in Sony Vegas. You can do this to anything as long as the area to be masked is white.
