<p>The other day, I was inspired by the movie, &#8220;<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1706593/" target="_blank">Chronicle</a>&#8221; to reproduce the titles shown at the end of the movie in Sony Vegas. It&#8217;s a very simple effect yet adds a nice little pop to titles and credits. In a nutshell, you&#8217;ll learn how to mask media events to make them transparent so that we can add any image or video behind them. Be sure to watch the video tutorial above to fully understand the power of masking.</p>
<p>In this written tutorial, we&#8217;ll mainly focus on how to mask text to reproduce the effect from the movie, &#8220;<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1706593/" target="_blank">Chronicle</a>&#8220;.</p>
<h3><strong>Step 1: Add Background Elements</strong></h3>
<p>Before we add any text, lets add what we want in the background.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4361" title="bgelement" src="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bgelement.jpg" alt="" width="441" height="133" srcset="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bgelement.jpg 441w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bgelement-300x90.jpg 300w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bgelement-364x110.jpg 364w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bgelement-159x48.jpg 159w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bgelement-318x96.jpg 318w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bgelement-313x94.jpg 313w" sizes="(max-width: 441px) 100vw, 441px" /></p>
<p>You can use anything you want here like some digital glitch footage or even a still image. I provided a short clip of digital glitch from which you can download below.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4354" title="Digital Glitch - Download" src="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/digitalglitch-300x201.png" alt="" width="300" height="201" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;">[button url=&#8221;https://s3.amazonaws.com/robertsproductions/downloads/Glitch_Footage.zip&#8221; size=&#8221;medium&#8221; variation=&#8221;green&#8221;]Download Digital Glitch (42.9MB)[/button]
<p style="text-align: center;">[highlight1 variation=&#8221;green&#8221;]Windows Media Audio/Video file (.wmv) 1280 x 720 42.9MB Length: 00:01:00[/highlight1]
<p>If you added a still image, you can make it move by adding the TV Simulator and Film Grain effects using the following settings.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">[tabs_framed]
[tab title=&#8221;TV Simulator Settings&#8221;]
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-4359" title="TV Simulator Settings" src="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/tvsimulator.png" alt="" width="594" height="418" srcset="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/tvsimulator.png 594w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/tvsimulator-300x211.png 300w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/tvsimulator-265x185.png 265w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/tvsimulator-561x395.png 561w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/tvsimulator-364x256.png 364w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/tvsimulator-68x48.png 68w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/tvsimulator-136x96.png 136w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/tvsimulator-313x220.png 313w" sizes="(max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">[/tab]
[tab title=&#8221;Film Grain Settings&#8221;]
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4355" title="Film Grain Settings" src="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/filmgrain.png" alt="" width="594" height="418" srcset="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/filmgrain.png 594w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/filmgrain-300x211.png 300w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/filmgrain-265x185.png 265w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/filmgrain-561x395.png 561w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/filmgrain-364x256.png 364w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/filmgrain-68x48.png 68w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/filmgrain-136x96.png 136w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/filmgrain-313x220.png 313w" sizes="(max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">[/tab]
[/tabs_framed]
<h3><strong>Step 2: Add Text</strong></h3>
<p>Under Media Generators in Vegas, add your preferred text preset whether it&#8217;s the ProType Titler or the standard Titles &amp; Text. I found the standard Titles &amp; Text Default preset worked best since I didn&#8217;t need anything too fancy.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor.jpg" data-rel="lightbox-image-0" data-rl_title="" data-rl_caption=""><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-4364" title="" src="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor.jpg" alt="" width="687" height="386" srcset="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor.jpg 981w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor-235x132.jpg 235w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor-768x431.jpg 768w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor-192x108.jpg 192w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor-384x216.jpg 384w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor-1-364x205.jpg 364w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor-1-728x410.jpg 728w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor-561x315.jpg 561w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor-758x426.png 758w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor-608x341.jpg 608w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor-85x48.jpg 85w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor-171x96.jpg 171w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor-313x176.jpg 313w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/textcolor-1-600x337.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 687px) 100vw, 687px" /></a></p>
<p>Be sure to keep your text &#8220;White&#8221;.</p>
<h3><strong>Step 3: Composite Mode</strong></h3>
<p>Change the Composite Mode for the track with the text media to, &#8220;Multiply (Mask)&#8221;. Your text should now be transparent and should show the background footage.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4353" title="Composite Mode" src="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositemode.png" alt="" width="380" height="355" srcset="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositemode.png 380w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositemode-300x280.png 300w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositemode-364x340.png 364w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositemode-51x48.png 51w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositemode-103x96.png 103w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositemode-313x292.png 313w" sizes="(max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px" /></p>
<p>You&#8217;re free to animate the text however you&#8217;d like. I made it zoom in a bit for each title.</p>
<p><iframe title="Mask Preview" width="719" height="404" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/oMN9IE1QMMk?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p><strong>Note: Everything under the Masked track won&#8217;t be visible unless there&#8217;s footage to mask. Place any other media in a track above the Masked track.</strong></p>
<h3><strong>Change Mask Background Color</strong></h3>
<p>To change the masks background color we need to add some media in an entirely new video track below everything else.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/maskbg.jpg" data-rel="lightbox-image-1" data-rl_title="" data-rl_caption=""><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-4418" title="" src="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/maskbg.jpg" alt="" width="645" height="237" srcset="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/maskbg.jpg 806w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/maskbg-300x110.jpg 300w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/maskbg-768x282.jpg 768w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/maskbg-561x206.jpg 561w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/maskbg-364x134.jpg 364w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/maskbg-1-758x278.jpg 758w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/maskbg-608x223.jpg 608w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/maskbg-131x48.jpg 131w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/maskbg-261x96.jpg 261w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/maskbg-313x115.jpg 313w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/maskbg-1-600x220.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px" /></a></p>
<p>Once added you may not see the color or video clip appear right away. This is because we need to parent the glitch footage with the text. You can do this by clicking Make Compositing Child on the glitch video track.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositechild.jpg" data-rel="lightbox-image-2" data-rl_title="" data-rl_caption=""><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-4417" title="" src="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositechild.jpg" alt="" width="646" height="234" srcset="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositechild.jpg 807w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositechild-300x109.jpg 300w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositechild-768x279.jpg 768w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositechild-561x204.jpg 561w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositechild-364x132.jpg 364w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositechild-1-758x275.jpg 758w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositechild-608x221.jpg 608w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositechild-132x48.jpg 132w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositechild-264x96.jpg 264w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositechild-313x114.jpg 313w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/compositechild-1-600x218.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 646px) 100vw, 646px" /></a></p>
<p>Now you should be able to see the background color you added.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/finalchild.jpg" data-rel="lightbox-image-3" data-rl_title="" data-rl_caption=""><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-4416" title="" src="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/finalchild.jpg" alt="" width="648" height="234" srcset="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/finalchild.jpg 810w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/finalchild-300x109.jpg 300w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/finalchild-768x278.jpg 768w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/finalchild-561x203.jpg 561w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/finalchild-364x132.jpg 364w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/finalchild-1-758x274.jpg 758w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/finalchild-608x220.jpg 608w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/finalchild-133x48.jpg 133w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/finalchild-265x96.jpg 265w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/finalchild-313x113.jpg 313w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/finalchild-1-600x217.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px" /></a></p>
<h3><strong>Alternate Way of Masking Text</strong></h3>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-4377" title="Change Background Color" src="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bluebgtxt.jpg" alt="" width="445" height="299" srcset="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bluebgtxt.jpg 445w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bluebgtxt-300x202.jpg 300w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bluebgtxt-180x120.jpg 180w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bluebgtxt-364x245.jpg 364w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bluebgtxt-71x48.jpg 71w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bluebgtxt-143x96.jpg 143w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/bluebgtxt-313x210.jpg 313w" sizes="(max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px" /></p>
<p>If you want to make the area behind the text a different color, change the text color in the Generated Text Media to transparent and the background to any color of your choice. You don&#8217;t need to change the composite mode for this method. Just leave it at, &#8220;Source Alpha&#8221;.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/txtcolor1.png" data-rel="lightbox-image-4" data-rl_title="" data-rl_caption=""><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-4381" title="" src="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/txtcolor1.png" alt="" width="442" height="632" srcset="https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/txtcolor1.png 553w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/txtcolor1-210x300.png 210w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/txtcolor1-364x520.png 364w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/txtcolor1-34x48.png 34w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/txtcolor1-67x96.png 67w, https://www.robertsproductions.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/txtcolor1-313x447.png 313w" sizes="(max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px" /></a></p>
<p>That&#8217;s it! You&#8217;ve just learned a few masking techniques in Sony Vegas. You can do this to anything as long as the area to be masked is white.</p>
<p><strong>This written tutorial was mainly focused on masking text. What are some things you&#8217;ve done to make text stand out more? Leave your response in the comments below!<br />
