In this weeks Windows Tip, we’ll take a look at a small application that can disable your screensaver while certain apps are open. So you’re sitting at your desk maybe doing homework and your screens shut off or those bubbles start to appear when you’re taking notes. With Cyber-D’s AntiScreensaver, you can automatically disable the screensaver when a web browser or word document is open. You can even chose specific websites that will disable your screensaver.

Usage:

Simply download it from Cyber-D’s blogspot, and install. The installer won’t ask you to install any other annoying programs like most freeware does.

Open it up and add which programs you’d like to disable the screensaver. Everything added here will disable the screensaver once they’re opened.

AntiScreensaver sits in your taskbar and will launch when Windows starts so once you set it you can forget about it. To exit, right click it in your taskbar and chose Exit. To disable it from opening when Windows starts, un-tick it in your startup script.

Update: To remove Cyber D’s AntiScreensaver, uninstall the program if it is located in your program list and delete the folder in C:\Program Files (x86)\Cyber D’s AntiScreensaver where C:\ is the path to your installation folder (May be different for you).

HyperDesktop is a free, easy way to capture, edit and share screenshots on the internet right from your desktop. Basically, all you have to do is take a screenshot and paste the link online. Simply, use one of the customizable shortcut keys for either of the three different types of captures; Entire screenshot, Selective Screenshot, or Window Screenshot.

As soon as you snap a screenshot, an optional edit dialog will display allowing you to draw on the image with the pen tool or add text.

When you’re happy with the results, click OK and HyperDesktop automatically uploads the screenshot to Imgur and copies the URL to the clipboard for easy sharing. It doesn’t just have to be Imgur, it can also upload straight to your site or storage location via FTP. You can also save screenshots locally.

Hyperdesktop works on Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8 both 32 and 64-bit.

Who better to use than the people who make Windows itself. Microsoft Security Essentials provides you with all the protection you need.

“The anti-annoying, anti-expensive, anti-virus program”

It’s extremely simple to use as it uses a simple red, yellow, green color code platform. When it’s green, you’re secured. If yellow or red, you may have some threats you need to take care of and remove. This can all be done in the taskbar without having to open the application itself. And you’ll only be alerted when you there’s specific actions you need to take. Why doesn’t this come pre-installed with Windows in the first place?

Some virus programs out there think they can just barge in and use all your computer’s resources. Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly in the background as it performs scans and updates when the PC is idle. Your PC will still be snappy when you’re using it.

In order to use this great anti-virus software for free, you need to be running genuine Windows. If you bought Windows or a computer with Windows, you should have genuine Windows.

This’ll work on all versions of Windows, XP and up.

As for me, I will no longer be dishing out good money for antivirus software when there’s a great free alternative. Of course if your happy with what you have, stick with it. Just my recommendation of a great free alternative.

Quick! You get a phone call from a client needing assistance with installing software. What do you do? You could try explaining things back and forth all by phone, but sometimes this leads to nowhere . What if there was a quick way to view that clients screen as if you were right there with them. Here’s a solution. QuickScreenShare.com will allow you to share your screen with anyone. No registration and it’s completely free. Nothing to install (assuming you have Java). It’ll work on Windows, Mac, and Linux. You can even control the remote clients mouse and keyboard!

How does it work?

When you first visit the site, you’re met with some options. The first option asks, “What do you want to share?” You can choose whether to share your screen with someone else or to view someone else’s screen. For whichever option you choose, you’ll get a one-time use link to send to your client or the person helping you. Once they click this link, they’ll be able to confirm the connection and then see and control your screen or vice versa. Be sure to enter your name in the “What’s your name?” box so that the other user will be sure they’re connecting with the right person.

The screenshot above shows the ONE time use link to send to the person you’re sharing with. Once you finish sharing and close the share window, this one time link will no longer work.

When they accept the connection, your/their screen will start streaming!

If you’re a little leery about allowing a remote connection to your computer, not a problem. You’ll be able to see the other users mouse moving around so that they can guide you in the right direction.

Another neat feature is that the sharee(you) also has the option to share their screen back to the sharer(client) in case they need to show something from their computer.

Basically, all you need for this to work is Java. Both the sharer and sharee must have it installed. Many computers already have Java installed on them but don’t worry if yours doesn’t, as it takes just a few steps to download and install it.

QuickScreenShare.com is a side project from the creators of Screencast-O-Matic.com and is still in BETA. I was able to put it to use a few times without any problems. It has a slight lag sometimes, but you can expect that from just about any remote connection. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to connect to your office computer with this since it’s mainly for one time use. Another thing is there isn’t any communication service built in, so it’s up to you to find a method of communication. You could talk to them by phone or use something like Skype to talk or chat. Nonetheless, you could always just use notepad within the screen share and chat that way.

This is where Zhorn Software’s Caffeine for Windows comes in. Like the Mac app, “Caffeine”, it’ll keep your PC awake when you want it to. It works by simulating a keypress once every 59 seconds. Your machine will think you’re still working at the keyboard and won’t activate the screensaver or go to sleep.

It’s just as easy to install as it is to use.

1. Simply download caffeine.zip from the Zhorn Software website.
2. Unzip the caffeine.zip folder
3. Double click the Caffeine icon, click Run.

That’s it! Its icon will appear in your taskbar already activated and running. Simply double click its icon to deactivate it when you step away. So when you’re at your desk watching that ten minute video everyone’s been talking about, you won’t have to worry about your screens going dark.

Why Caffeine? In my opinion, It’s a whole lot easier using this simple application than going through all your power settings, and turning off power saving options every time you want to use your computer without any botheration.

Have you ever wondered if there was a way to save all open applications when you log off like you can on the Mac? You can shutdown, logoff, restart your computer and when you log back in, all your applications will re-open. Windows has no built in features for this but I think I found a good alternative. It’s called “Cache My Work”. It basically does all that! Saves open applications and folders when you logoff/restart or shut down your computer and they will then reopen when you log back in!
