Sony Vegas: Insert Time

If you need to create space in between clips in Sony Vegas, you can do so by Inserting Time. Select where you want to insert the time and position the cursor. From the Insert menu, choose Time. In the Insert Time dialog box, enter the amount of time you want to insert and click OK.

To delete time, turn on Auto Ripple (Ctrl+L). Make sure All Tracks, Markers, and Regions is chosen from the down arrow next to the Auto Ripple button. Highlight the area of time you want to delete and press Delete on your keyboard. The time will be deleted and all your events should connect as intended.

Sony Vegas: Splitting Events

Splitting events in Sony Vegas can be very helpful when editing. It allows you to break a single event into multiple sections that you can edit independently. Position the cursor where you want to split the event and hit the shortcut key “S” on your keyboard. This can also be done within the menu bar by going to Edit > Split.

An alternative would be to hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift and click where you want to split the event. You can also hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift and drag over an event to split it at the point you click and trim it.

Sony Vegas: Spacebar/F12 Play Settings

One of the most commonly used shortcut keys in Sony Vegas is the Spacebar. It is used to Play and Stop the video when previewing certain sections. By default, the Spacebar and F12 keys are set to Play and Stop the video, therefore returning the cursor back to the position it started at. You can change these settings to make the Spacebar and F12 buttons Play and Pause the video instead of Play and Stop. Under Options > Preferences, in the General Tab you can toggle the “Make Spacebar and F12 Play/Pause instead of Play/Stop” setting on or off to fit your needs.

Sony Vegas: Duplicate Timeline Events

Quickly duplicate any timeline events in Sony Vegas by holding Ctrl while dragging the media over to your target position. To duplicate multiple events at once, select them all and Ctrl — drag them to your target position. Once you let go, you’ll have an exact copy of those events.

Sony Vegas: Sync Cursor

While animating keyframes in Sony Vegas, you can synchronize the cursor positions on the main timeline and Keyframe Controller timeline. To do this, simply select the Sync Cursor button. If you move the cursor in either window, it’ll automatically position itself in both timelines. Select it again, to turn it off.

Sony Vegas: Manage Window Layouts

Do you have a particular layout you like working with in Sony Vegas? Did you know you can save those layouts and come back to them later? Feel free to move all the windows around to your liking and go to View > Window Layouts > Save Layout As and give it a name. Once saved, you can come back to any layout by going to View > Window Layouts and choosing your saved layout or using the assigned shortcut key. This is especially useful when you use different layouts for video editing, sound editing or even color correcting.

You can always go back to the default layout by going to View > Window Layouts > Default Layout.
