Using shortcut keys for editing in Adobe Premiere Pro is useful for an efficient workflow. Let’s take a look at some of the ways you could use shortcuts to speed up your workflow.

The top keys I frequent most are V for the Move Tool and C for the Razor Tool. I also use Ctrl for making Ripple Edits all the time.

Ripple Edits

To temporarily toggle the Ripple Edit tool for trimming down a video, make sure you have the Move Tool active and hold Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac). The cursor will turn yellow letting you know it’s active. Once you trim the video clip, it will automatically fill in the gap without you having to readjust the video. Once you let go of Ctrl or Cmd, the cursor will turn back to the normal Move Tool (red).

For an even faster method, move the Playhead over the area you want to cut and press Q. This will trim the clip up to the Playhead and ripple delete the rest.

For trimming the end of a clip or everything after the Playhead, press W. This shortcut affects all tracks.

Note: If you’re trying to ripple edit footage and it won’t budge, check for grouped clips, audio tracks, or other video clips that are stuck. Re-adjust those clips or lock the tracks you don’t want affected by the ripple edit.

Cuts

To make a cut, simply press C and click wherever you want the cut to take place. If you want the cut to affect all tracks, hold Shift and all the tracks will be affected.

For more precise edits, move the Playhead over to the cut point and press Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) + K to make a cut.

Press Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) + Shift + K to affect all tracks.

Deleting Clips

When you press Delete, it will simply delete the clip but leave a gap. Press Shift + Delete and the track will ripple delete closing in the gap.

Did you know you can combine multiple tracks in Vegas Pro? Instead of having a bunch of tracks stacked up on top of each other cluttering your timeline, open a new window of Vegas. Place all your edits, titles, tracks, etc. how you want in there. Save the project as you would any other project and drag that newly saved .veg file into your final project. This means you can drag any .veg file directly into your timeline. Best part, if you make edits to those .veg files they’ll automatically update in the timeline when you save them. (See Video Tutorial)

Have you ever tried editing a music video with a multi-camera sequence where you need to sync the two video clips together, but you never get it just right? You zoom in as far as you can on the timeline to move the clip up or down a frame but you just can’t get it right. The clip keeps snapping to the frame boundary and you’re not able to get it synced. By now, you probably pulled a few hairs out and no longer need a haircut! Well, look no further. The snapping of boundaries is caused by having “Quantize to Frames” turned on. It forces edits to snap to the time ruler points in the timeline.

To turn off Quantize to Frames, simply go to, “Options” – “Quantize to Frames”. Click it once to un-check it and disable it. Click it again to check it and enable it. You can also use the shortcut key, “Alt+F8”.

Go ahead try it out, add two video clips stacked on the timeline and move them around. They snap to each frame. Now, turn off “Quantize to Frames”. You’ll notice there’s no more snapping and you’re now able to move the clips around freely.

Vegas does however mention that edits in which do not occur on frame bounderies can produce an undesirable visual result. Therefore, I’d only turn this off when syncing together music videos or any other multi-camera sequences.

Quantize to Frames On:

Notice how the time indicator(highlighted) is sitting directly on a frame boundary. Quantize to Frames is turned on in this example.

Quantize to Frames Off:

Notice how the time indicator(highlighted) is sitting in-between a frame boundary. Quantize to Frames is turned off in this example.
