Vegas Pro 12 is available in two configurations. The traditional Vegas Pro 12 collection will include Vegas Pro 12, DVD Architect Pro 5.2 and Dolby Digital Professional Encoder for all your video, audio, and disc authoring needs. The more affordable Vegas Pro 12 Edit however comes with everything above except DVD Architect Pro. This is great if you need the editing power but don’t have any use for the DVD authoring software.

The media will automatically and dynamically switch from original to proxy based on the Preview playback settings. Original media files will be used for the final render.
• FX Masking
  • Now you can mask and effect rather than the image itself. Perfect for quickly blurring or pixelating certain areas of video clips such as logos, license plates or a person’s face.

• Shape Masking tools
  • Previous versions of Vegas Pro included the simple Bezier Masking Tool (Pen Tool) which is powerful and accurate but can sometimes be too much for simple masking. The new rectangle/square and oval/circle Masking Tools make it much easier to mask portions of the media by drawing the desired shape over the appropriate areas.
• Layer Dimensionality Video FX and Compositor
  • Adding white text over video clips can sometimes be hard to read. With Layer Dimensionality, you can add the appearance of depth to graphics and video clips. Useful for elements with alpha transparency layers, you can add realistic shadows, glow, and embossing effects. Layer Dimensionality is also available as a Compositor plugin, making it useful in conjunction with Track Motion and picture-in-picture effects.
• Vegas Pro Explorer Redesign
  • The updated Vegas Pro Explorer now features a Thumbnail View, and supports Windows libraries including My Songs, my Videos, and My Pictures. Auto-text fill and “Breadcrumb Control” similar to Window s Explorer lets you quickly navigate to previous directories in your system. Using Ctrl+ the mouse wheel scaled the thumbnail images for added image detail while browsing.

• Expanded Edit Mode
  • Double click at the edit point to see the timeline in a detailed “A-B Roll” view. The adjacent frames of the events at the edit point can be clearly viewed above the tracks for reference, and unused media in the events can be seen in the track area. The edit point/event edge is then highlighted in red and can be trimmed with the mouse or numeric keypad. Setting a Loop Region around the edit point enables you to dynamically add or remove frames from either side of the edit point while the media is playing, creating a highly precise editing experience.

• Panasonic P2 Support – Edit the DVCPRO 25/50/100 and AVC-Intra 50/100 MXF files natively.
• HDCAM SR (SStP) Mastering – Encode to all flavors of the HDCAM SR mastering format.
• LAB Adjust and L*a*b* Color Space Histogram – Manipulate colors using the powerful L*a*b* color space.
• Edit Properties for Multiple Video Files – Edit file properties for a variety of media at once.

If you’re serious about video editing on a professional level, consider giving Vegas Pro 12 a try. However, if you’re just looking to edit family video, or let’s say vacation footage you may not want to invest in something you won’t use very often, therefore you might want to go with the much more affordable, Movie Studio series. This is where Zhorn Software’s Caffeine for Windows comes in. Like the Mac app, “Caffeine”, it’ll keep your PC awake when you want it to. It works by simulating a keypress once every 59 seconds. Your machine will think you’re still working at the keyboard and won’t activate the screensaver or go to sleep.

It’s just as easy to install as it is to use.

1. Simply download caffeine.zip from the Zhorn Software website.
2. Unzip the caffeine.zip folder
3. Double click the Caffeine icon, click Run.

That’s it! Its icon will appear in your taskbar already activated and running. Simply double click its icon to deactivate it when you step away. So when you’re at your desk watching that ten minute video everyone’s been talking about, you won’t have to worry about your screens going dark.

Why Caffeine? In my opinion, It’s a whole lot easier using this simple application than going through all your power settings, and turning off power saving options every time you want to use your computer without any botheration.

Get “Cache My Work”

Have you ever wondered if there was a way to save all open applications when you log off like you can on the Mac? You can shutdown, logoff, restart your computer and when you log back in, all your applications will re-open. Windows has no built in features for this but I think I found a good alternative. It’s called “Cache My Work”. It basically does all that! Saves open applications and folders when you logoff/restart or shut down your computer and they will then reopen when you log back in!

What better to celebrate New Years than a fireworks show! In today’s tutorial, I’ll show you how to create some abstract fireworks in Adobe After Effects for use in your video projects. You can even refer to my AE Snow tutorial here to save this pre-keyed for use in any of your preferred video editors. Heck, I’ll even include the project files which you can download below! Lets get started!

Assuming you already have After Effects open, lets create a new Composition. Composition > New Composition or Ctrl-N. In the Composition Settings, lets set the preset to HDTV 1080 29.97. This way our fireworks will be in 1920x1080px aspect ratio with a frame rate of 29.97. I’m going to make the duration 5 seconds (0;00;05;00) but of course you use whatever you need for you particular project. Click OK.

With our new composition, lets create a new Solid. Go to Layer > New > Solid. In the Solid Settings dialogue window, lets click on Make Comp Size just to make sure it’s the same size as our composition. We can name it, “Fireworks” and Click OK.

In this method, we’ll be making the fireworks with one of After Effects’ built in Effects & Presets. So, with your Fireworks solid selected choose Effect > Simulation > CC Particle Systems II.

If you scrub through the timeline, you’ll see the particles showering down kind of like welding sparks. We’re going to need to adjust some settings to turn this into fireworks.

Lets go ahead and dive right into the Physics settings for the CC Particle Systems II effect. Turn off the gravity somewhat, around 0.2 works here.

Now to add some Resistance to our fireworks, turn it up to 10.0.

Now if you scrub through, it’ll look more like fireworks but is non stop. We’re actually going to have to animate the Birth Rate. Make sure you’re positioned at the beginning of the timeline at 0;00;00;00.

Click the stopwatch next to Birth Rate to turn on keyframes and activate the animation.

In this position, set the Birth Rate to 30.0 or 40.0.

Move up about 2 to 3 frames in your timeline and set the birth rate to 0.0.

Scrub through and look at that! A Firework!

Well, if you want the firework to be yellow, you’re done. If you want to change the color. Go to Particle in the settings and change the Birth Color and Death Color to whatever you want.

You can then duplicate the “Fireworks” layer (Ctrl-D), and change the color and position in the Producer as well as move it around in the sequence you want in the timeline.

Render it out and use it in your video! Again, if you want to render this out pre-keyed, I recommend watching near the end of this video here.

Of course, if you have or ever used Trapcode Particular, you can get these to look pretty realistic! But since I love effects that can be done in AE alone, I thought I would share this.
