Using shortcut keys for editing in Adobe Premiere Pro is useful for an efficient workflow. Let’s take a look at some of the ways you could use shortcuts to speed up your workflow.

The top keys I frequent most are V for the Move Tool and C for the Razor Tool. I also use Ctrl for making Ripple Edits all the time.

Ripple Edits

To temporarily toggle the Ripple Edit tool for trimming down a video, make sure you have the Move Tool active and hold Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac). The cursor will turn yellow letting you know it’s active. Once you trim the video clip, it will automatically fill in the gap without you having to readjust the video. Once you let go of Ctrl or Cmd, the cursor will turn back to the normal Move Tool (red).

For an even faster method, move the Playhead over the area you want to cut and press Q. This will trim the clip up to the Playhead and ripple delete the rest.

For trimming the end of a clip or everything after the Playhead, press W. This shortcut affects all tracks.

Note: If you’re trying to ripple edit footage and it won’t budge, check for grouped clips, audio tracks, or other video clips that are stuck. Re-adjust those clips or lock the tracks you don’t want affected by the ripple edit.

Cuts

To make a cut, simply press C and click wherever you want the cut to take place. If you want the cut to affect all tracks, hold Shift and all the tracks will be affected.

For more precise edits, move the Playhead over to the cut point and press Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) + K to make a cut.

Press Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) + Shift + K to affect all tracks.

Deleting Clips

When you press Delete, it will simply delete the clip but leave a gap. Press Shift + Delete and the track will ripple delete closing in the gap.

Ever want to display your video in full screen? Coming from Sony Vegas, I remember there was a button on the preview window for viewing full screen. Click that, and the preview window would enlarge. Adobe Premiere Pro also enables this ability and can be done with a simple shortcut key.

To view the preview full screen:

Windows

Mac

<kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>`</kbd>

<kbd>Cmd</kbd> + <kbd>`</kbd>

The <kbd>`</kbd> (Accent key) is typically located above the Tab key or just left of the numerical 1 on the keyboard.

Use the <kbd>Spacebar</kbd> to play your video. Or you can also use the Shuttle Keys <kbd>J</kbd> (Shuttle Reverse), <kbd>K</kbd> (Shuttle Stop) and <kbd>L</kbd> (Shuttle Forward) to play your video.

Got a second monitor? Simply drag the Program monitor window to it and when you toggle full screen, it will display on that monitor. You can continue editing on your primary monitor with full screen enabled.

Mercury Transmit

You can also use Mercury Transmit to send video frames to external video devices. I personally found playback to be more choppy when trying this but it may work better for external video cards transmitting to a TV or monitor. It’s probably because all (3) of my monitors are on a single video card and I still had the Preview window open in Premiere. I’ll need to do more testing with this.

You can enable it from the Edit > Preferences > Playback… window. It gives you the option to choose what monitor(s) you’d like to use. There’s also an option to “Disable video output when in the background” which will stop transmitting a video preview when Premiere is minimized or not the foreground application.

Adobe Premiere Pro allows you to hide files in the project panel, including bins. Now there are a variety of reasons you might want to use this. Especially if you have quite a few files you’re working with. Perhaps you want to focus on a specific set of assets. You can hide everything but those specific assets.

Or perhaps you’re sending a project off to another editor. You may not want to confuse them with extra video clips in the project panel that doesn’t pertain to their task.

Or maybe you’re working with a client over your shoulder. Hiding clips may be handy to keep them from asking to watch all the extra clips you have.

To hide files in the project panel:

Select all the files you want hidden

Right-click and choose Hide

To reveal hidden files in the project panel:

Right-click anywhere in the project panel and choose View Hidden

Click View Hidden again to re-hide those files.

Add a keyboard shortcut and you’ll be hiding clips in a flash.

Simply go to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts and type “hid” in the search. Scroll down to Project Panel and from here you can add a shortcut for both the Hide function and the View Hidden function. Click to highlight the shortcut for the command you’d like to set a shortcut for and press in the shortcut keys you want to use. I went with Ctrl-H since it wasn’t currently used.

Now all you have to do is type in the assigned shortcut key(s) to View or Hide hidden files.
